Sound Project Blog:)

Hello, blog! Recently in my AICE Media class we've been working on learning how sound works in films. We learned about foley, stings, sound effects, and all the different kinds that can be used. My class and I were assigned a Sound Project in which we filmed a short sound only film (so, absolutely no visual..). We had to create our own foley sounds and edit it together with other sound effects to create our own story. We had to use plenty of noises and overlap them to make it sound good and natural. With my classmate, Nicole, we decided on our story being about a girl taking a piss in the middle of a football game. We used a project outline to help us organise all the sounds we wanted to use, select what order we wanted each sound at, to see the amount of sounds we would need, and to see how the overall story would go.

This was our project outline:

We created the sounds and edited together. It took us a few days to collect all of our sounds, but we were able to collect amazing sounds (and plenty!). We decided to create this story because we thought it was funny and original. It is an intimate moment so hearing the film is a bit awkward but it turned out great.

For this project, we created mostly foley sounds, recorded a few sounds from the natural environment, and used a few sound effects found online. We recorded the band playing and crowd cheering during a real football game, and we also recorded birds chirping in their natural habitat. We, as well, recorded me running through grass and bleachers, the rubbing of paper and clothes, door squeaks, knocking, a zipper noise opening and closing, the pouring of liquids into toilet, and recorded the toilet seat being opened and closed. We also made sounds with our mouths, such as grunting, heavy breathing, groaning, coughing, and dialogue.

This is a video of us making our foley sounds: https://youtu.be/918MQqcMLVI ! :)

The editing was rough. Neither of us had ever worked with overlapping so many sounds. We worked on Adobe Premiere. We had to look at a few tutorials to learn how to edit it. The project took a few hours. It was challenging to organise so many sounds because sometimes they would get lost and it would take time to find it and overlap it all at the perfect time. Editing this was a very difficult and meticulous job. We had to pay very close attention to each detail to make sure it wasn't either too loud or too quiet. We had to get rid of visuals, volume everything properly, and make sure that we weren't missing any important sounds.

This is a google drive folder with two pictures of our editing process and what it looked like when everything was overlapped: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/19HCpzEWT-WQB2AtjbsqM4MP2BVxHosox?usp=sharing

Overall, this was a very entertaining project to do. I learned all the different ways that sound is produced and it made me appreciate sounds in films a lot more! I learned how hard and detailed making sounds for films is. At first, it was a bit difficult to communicate the story with absolutely no visual, but we pulled through! I think our project was well done and entertaining.

In this folder is the final Sound Project! I am very proud of it, it's my first! :D
